I finally got around to making this page where you can happily judge my taste in anime anonymously. This list won’t be in alphabetical order for organization purposes but I will BOLD and ~colorize~ any anime I found particularly enjoyable and would highly recommend at least a few episodes of watching before dropping it. Sometimes there may be an * to warn you of something. Anime movies are NOT in this list and may be it’s own separate list one day (though if I liked the anime, most likely I’ll like the movie.)

Anyways, this list will be updated as I continue watching new anime or put in some I forgot, haha.

(I put the title, table of basic info, and a summary (some are long) of said anime)

Aishiteruze Baby*

Katakura Kippei is in every way a high school playboy. Spending his days flirting with any female he can see, responsibility is the last thing on his mind. Life takes an unexpected turn for him as one day he returns home to find himself with the fulltime task of caring for his 5-year-old cousin…Yuzuyu. “

*Okay, so technically I only read the manga of this anime and that was years ago, but I read it until the end and remembered that it was enjoyable, so I’d give it a try if you want to watch an older anime. Just be prepared for 2004 anime style…

This will either terrify or enamour you

In these fast paced trials, Ryuuichi is forced to think outside the box to uncover the truth of the crimes that have taken place in order to prove the innocence of his clients”.

*Okay, guilty again of solely consuming this through a medium in that is not the anime. I feel most people who know of Phoenix Wright or Ryuuichi Naruhodou know him from the Ace Attorney Nintendo series.

This baby right here. Recommend to play it yourself!

Ah, Bleach had a good run for a good while until it didn’t (a lot of Bleach fans point to a certain arc that was the catalyst of this good anime’s downfall). Regardless, I’d give it a watch until at least then. Bleach was one of my childhood anime, so I got a soft spot for it.

The story takes place inside the human body, where trillions of anthropomorphic cells each do their job to keep the body healthy. The series largely focuses on two such cells; a rookie red blood cell, AE3803, who often gets lost during deliveries, and a relentless white blood cell, U-1146, who fights against any germs that invade the body”.

*This is a good one even if it does seem more for kids. But if it’s too childish for you, Cells at Work: Code Black, is premiering this month (January 2021), and proves to be for more mature audiences so look forward to that!

(Note (15/05/21: With the end of Code Black, I can give a bit more info. Plus, after watching a few episodes, I would definitely recommend. Just be prepared for being guilt-tripped over how badly we treat our bodies.)

Due to poor lifestyle choices, a certain human’s body is in constant turmoil. With germs, bacteria, and foreign substances abound, the jobs of various cells become increasingly difficult and dangerous. As some of the unfortunate ones who matured in this chaotic environment, Sekkekkyuu AA2153 and Hakkekkyuu U-1196 strive to fulfill their duties—even if it means seeing many of their fellow cells lose their lives in duty”.

How will the story go from here?

*This was another childhood anime (there was an original all the way back in 2001!) and I finished all of the original manga. You can watch the 2001 version but even though I haven’t finished the current one, I’d recommend it over the old one.

One of, if not, my most favourite anime of all time. If you want to sludge through over 300 episodes, please do! For some reason, a lot of people hate the first couple of episodes but I found Gintama funny from the start (then again, I was 11 when I started this anime).

Still, give it a few episodes to pick up and it will be worth it. I won’t say much more because I’ll for sure write up an appreciation post for Gintama in the future.

Oh, and what’s the plot of Gintama?

Genre# of EpisodesAired
Comedy, Historical, Parody52 (just Axis Powers)2009-2010

*Hetalia is a rather touchy subject. A lot of people love it, rather that be for the cute handsome personification of the countries of the world or for the history or both, while others hate it for the same reasons. The Hetalia fandom hasn’t really helped in that regard as some fans have been known to romantacize events such as the world wars, Nazi Germany, and other touchier subjects.

**But as for me, I again have a soft spot for Hetalia (again middle school and awkward high school years) but also because I do truly believe the creator of Hetalia, Hidekaz Himaruya, meant no harm or malicious intent with personifying the stereotypes of each country into the bodies of handsome young men (and women). I’ll definitely have to write up a post on Hetalia one day.

***Also, if you are interested in watching it, each episodes is only like 5 minutes – very bingeable.

This is a very trippy anime with two versions. Don’t know much about the reception of the 2020 version but if it’s like Fruit Basket, I’d give it a try.

Incredibly gifted in the arts, Hagumi enrolls in Takemoto’s university and soon befriends the popular pottery student Ayumi Yamada. Ayumi is already well acquainted with the three flatmates and secretly harbors deep feelings for one of them

*I really think this is an anime of nostalgia for me. I feel not a lot of people know or acknowledge it, which is a shame since I think it’s a good one. Pretty chill compared to some anime on here. Give it a chance especially if you’re a college student or post.

The dull boy has a grueling road ahead, but with the help of his new criminal affiliates and his peculiar home tutor, perhaps even Loser Tsuna can achieve greatness.

To reach their goal, they have to cross pathways with several powerful teams, some of which have one of the five players with godlike abilities, whom Kuroko and Taiga make a pact to defeat.

*Was introduced to this anime through the first movie (which is basically the first season). I really love the story but especially the art/animation style is one of the best out of the anime on this list (I mean, the studio who worked on this is Kyoto Animation after all).

I think this one is also too popular to even bother with a plot description.

Surprise Surprise, with the help of his idol, Captain America All Might, Izuku develops a quirk on his own and is able to attend the prestigious hero school, UA High where we meet a varied and impressionable cast of characters. Let the adventure begin.

*This anime is a terrible trip if you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into. There are two ways to watch this: the chronological way or air date order. *I got further in the manga than the anime, so take that as you will ( though I think you can tell I’m notorious for dropping anime unintentionally).

A world where a human’s state of mind and the criminal potential of their personality can be quantified. While all sorts of inclinations are recorded and policed, these measured numbers used to judge people’s souls are commonly called one’s… PSYCHO-PASS.

Season 1 tells the story of Shinya Kogami, a former Inspector-turned-Enforcer and the hunt for his nemesis, Shogo Makishima. It is told from the point of view of newly-minted Inspector, Akane Tsunemori, who is assigned as his superior in Division 1 of the Ministry of Welfare’s Criminal Investigation Department. The Extended Edition abridges the S1 anime while adding new footage that alludes to events in the official novel.

*I’ve only seen the first season so I can’t say anything about later seasons.

Saga of Tanya the Evil*

Genre# of EpisodesAired
Action, Military, Magic122017

Tanya Degurechaff is a young soldier infamous for predatorial-like ruthlessness and an uncanny, tactical aptitude, earning her the nickname of the “Devil of the Rhine.” Underneath her innocuous appearance, however, lies the soul of a man who challenged Being X, the self-proclaimed God, to a battle of wits—which resulted in him being reincarnated as a little girl into a world of magical warfare.

*I’m currently rewatching this for like the 2nd time. I guess I like watching animes about demented lolis? For this one, I also really suggest reading the manga as there is much more Tanya to be had. There is also a light novel so if you’re more of a wordy person, then read that instead. The artwork is different between the manga, anime and light novel so maybe you’ll find the style you like as well.

From left to right, light novel, manga, and anime.

Shugo Chara! (aka Guardian Character!)*

*This is definitely NOT for everyone. To be fair, I first watched this anime when I was 11, so prime target audience for this show. I put this on the list because nostalgia (of course), but also I know for sure I’ll be rewatching this even if I’m approaching my mid-20s. Hey, if you wanna watch a shoujo anime for kids then Shugo Chara! is here for you.

Sword Art Online (abridged)*

Genre# of EpisodesAired
Comedy, Parody, Abridgement15 (and counting?)2013-?

*Okay, so this is an exception because I’ve only watched a handful of the actual Sword Art Online and barely remember them, but the abridged? The abridged I’m rewatching for the hundredth time as I write this up. Seriously, it’s perhaps the best anime abridged on YouTube.

Tokyo Ghoul*

Genre# of EpisodesAired
Horror, Action, Mystery, Drama, Supernatural, Psychological, Seinen12 (Just the 1st season)2014

Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki, a shy, bookish college student, who is instantly drawn to Rize Kamishiro, an avid reader like himself. However, Rize is not exactly who she seems, and this unfortunate meeting pushes Kaneki into the dark depths of the ghouls’ inhuman world. In a twist of fate, Kaneki is saved by the enigmatic waitress Touka Kirishima, and thus begins his new, secret life as a half-ghoul/half-human who must find a way to integrate into both societies.

*READ THE MANGA. Is perhaps what most Tokyo Ghoul fans who have read the manga and seen the anime will tell you. I watched the anime in ignorant bliss before reading the manga and honestly for once, I agree that the manga is leagues better than the anime in many respects. From story to the artwork (Sui Ishida, the creator of Tokyo Ghoul, is a lovely lovely artist).

*I never finished this one but unfortunately I’ve been spoiled on what happens in the end. I still want to watch it though. It has lovely artwork and a lovely soundtrack.

*Never finished this one but I’ve not hard anything bad about it honestly and the episodes I di watch was good from what I remember. If you don’t like gay anime then don’t watch. Though I swear, this was all the rage back in 2016.
